Baylor Scott & White Emergency Medical Center in Cedar Park recently hosted members of the Girl Scouts of Lakeline Service Unit Troop #2070, as they got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to handle urgent first aid issues during a guided tour of the facility.
Led by Renee Hughbanks Votruba, hospital administrator, the girls made their way through the emergency department and imaging center, where they had the opportunity to meet with emergency physician Dr. Frederick Levy, paramedic Christopher Barbella and X-ray technician Derrek Gomez. Gomez explained the workings of the X-ray and CAT scan machines to the inquisitive group.
“The girls had so many great questions!” said Votruba. “Events like this give us an opportunity to connect with families in our community and educate young children not only on prevention, but also preparedness. We’re so honored to be a part of their learning experience.”
Excited to see more, the troop journeyed through the bandage room, where they discovered casts, bandages and crutches, then moved on to the giant scale, which was big enough to weigh all seven girls at once. They ended their tour after a visit to the inpatient rooms, where the doctors helped them take their own blood pressure.
The troop’s trip to Baylor Scott & White EMC aimed to fulfill the First Aid badge requirement, which encourages the girls to talk with ER staff and learn how they can better prepare to help others when urgent medical issues arise. Fourth-grader Clara Mae Madden selected the badge on behalf of the troop as part of her leadership development and desire to help people in need.
When asked her favorite part of the tour, Madden said “All of it! I can’t choose a favorite part!”
