Jennifer Garrett

RN – Baylor Emergency Medical Centers at Murphy

How long have you worked here?
I have worked at Baylor EMC since February 2015. I started out as a PRN based at our Murphy location, but was able to float to neighboring facilities for work, which was so much fun, and I learned a lot. I officially became a full-time employee at Murphy in March this year.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I was a clinical research nurse at a major cancer center in Dallas, where I worked toward placing patients on clinical trials driven by drug manufacturers. I learned all about molecular biology, virology, the development and phases, inclusion/exclusion criteria and monitoring of the actual trials. The positon was extremely involved and specific – at times, it required me to read and memorize as many as 20 clinical trial protocols at once! It was very intense.

What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
A few months ago, we had a chest pain present at Murphy, and our team was on top of it! I happened to be the one to get the EKG. It turned out to be a STEMI. My first STEMI. I calmly smiled at the family and said “Ok, great, I’ll go give this to the doctor and we’ll be right back.” I walked over to Dr. Bruffy-Holmes to let him know it appeared that the patient has a STEMI. He got the ball rolling right away, and we were able to get the patient transferred to another hospital for higher-level care immediately. I felt proud to have played a part in that process, and extremely proud of our leadership and teamwork at Murphy that day.

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
Learn some form of martial arts, travel to all of the major cities in the world and pay for my daughter’s college education without her having to work.

What is your hidden talent, hobby or greatest interest outside of work?
I really enjoy being on the water – sailing, water skiing and swimming. I also love to snow ski, play tennis, sing karaoke with my daughter and bake cakes!

What are your top 3 life highlights?
Marrying my best friend, giving birth to my beautiful daughter and graduating nursing school.

What is your dream vacation?
Two weeks in Hawaii with my whole family.

If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
While I truly admire inventors, philosophers and intellectual pioneers, if given a choice, I would choose to be me, because I absolutely love my life and wouldn’t change it for anything in the world!

Favorite national observance/why?
New Years Eve has always been my favorite because I like to reflect on the past year with gratitude, while looking ahead to the future with hopes of continued success.

Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
“Patch Adams,” because laughter is medicine. And how cute are those kids!?

Complete this sentence about what your hospital brings to the community, or what you love about your hospital:
“My hospital…”

My hospital stands out from the rest because of the compassion, attentiveness and camaraderie of our staff. I have never worked anywhere that truly felt like an actual family. I love that I can walk into work at any time, on any shift, and actually be happy to see the people I work with. After having several days off from work in a row, there are often times when I look forward to coming back to work my next shift. I can’t say that about any other place I have worked in the past. It is truly my home away from home.
