James Shelton

NRP – Baylor Emergency Medical Centers at Keller & Colleyville

How long have you worked here?
Two years. I’m a Paramedic ED tech, lab coordinator for Keller and Colleyville, safety officer for Keller, supply person for Keller.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I served as assistant fire chief for a volunteer fire department, and had the pleasure of bringing a dying department back to life.

What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
Working in a smaller campus setting allows our staff to spend more time with patients to provide necessary education about their diseases, injuries and illnesses. I feel that patients who are educated about their condition are more likely to remain compliant with care plans and treatment processes.

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
Own an Aston Martin (would love to have a James Band car), travel to NYC and travel to Australia to visit the Sydney Opera House.

What is your hidden talent, hobby or greatest interest outside of work?
Aviation. If it involves planes, I’m all for it – from watching planes at DFW Airport, to identifying the type of aircraft flying overhead.

What are your top 3 life highlights?
Getting engaged to the love of my life and our pending wedding date, working toward my paramedic to RN bridge, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while holding a full-time AND part-time job, and having served for 10 years in CareFlite and being appointed our liaison for Special Olympics of Texas.

What is your dream vacation?
Any vacation that involves a nice beach with a place to surf and snorkel.

If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
I love history, so I would choose to be a witness to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I like to look at the context of everything, and If I lived during the time of the signing, I would be able to experience the spirit in which it was written.

Favorite national observance/why?
Christmas. Not only for the obvious religious reasons, but also for the spirit that fills the air, the decorations, the spirit of selfless giving and everyone just seems to be in a lighter mood.

Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
“Patch Adams.” I feel that Patch’s approach to medicine was ahead of it’s time. He focused on on bringing joy to his patients and incorporate a holistic approach by getting the patient’s family involved in their care.

Complete this sentence about what your hospital brings to the community, or what you love about your hospital:
“My hospital…”

My hospital excels at patient care, because we’re empowered by leadership to spend time with our patients, get to know them and cater to their needs, but to also cater to the needs of their families.
